IoD An Audience with Steve Rotheram - Metro Mayor, Liverpool City Region
Thursday 12th September 2019
The Institute of Directors (IoD) hosted an audience with Steve Rotherham, Metro Mayor for Liverpool City Region at Rathbone's in the beautiful and ornate Port of Liverpool Building on Liverpool's waterfront. As a Committee Member of the IoD Liverpool Branch, and with a portfolio for equality & diversity matters, I was interested in what Mayor Rotheram had to say about the plans for the region. The event was well attended with movers and shakers from the city, however as always, when I attend these events as a business leader, I often find that I am one of a tiny number of delegates from an ethnic minority. Indeed this has been a phenomenon that has plagued the whole of my working life. As a city with such a rich history of diversity, having one of the oldest black communities in Britain and the oldest Chinese community in Europe, it dismays me to see the lack of representation of these groups in senior positions in business. The talent is certainly out there, but this pool of talent is repeatedly overlooked.
So I felt compelled to ask the question of what is being done to address this issue. I was heartened by Mayor Rotheram's dissatisfaction with the status quo and a genuine desire for things to change. I look forward to working with and supporting the work of his team to make real and lasting change. The time is now.
